THE CURE Philip Zimmermann (1977)

This was the first offset lithographic book that I printed myself. It was produced on the Rutherford flatbed offset proof press at Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY when I was in graduate school there. The edition was ten copies, printed on Mohawk Superfine paper with Canson cover paper, bound in a traditional Japanese stab binding. Each cover had a different color cover with a different cut-out image of hands cut from makeready for the book and glued on. I made the halftones with non-glare glass using the "fine line" process. The images are from old postcards that I bought at an old Swiss "bad" of spa that I had visited in 1976. The borders were from a Dover book of old borders and cartouches which I made line shots of. There is a rather vague implied narrative in the order of the images.

Making and printing this book is what made me fall in love with offset lithography and lithographic prepress work.
